Somerled, the 12th-century Norse-Gaelic warlord and progenitor of Clan Donald, is traditionally believed to have been buried on Iona, a small island off the west coast of Scotland. Iona was a significant religious and burial site for Scottish and Norse-Gaelic nobility.
Although the exact location of his grave has not been definitively identified, medieval sources and tradition strongly associate his burial with Iona Abbey, where many kings of Scotland, Ireland, and Norway were also said to be buried.
