EES at Dover and Eurotunnel: what happens at the port
On this page
The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) replaces passport stamping for non-EU visitors, including British passport holders. It started on 12 October 2025 (GOV.UK). If you drive to France through Dover or Folkestone, GOV.UK says any EES checks are completed at the border before you leave the UK (GOV.UK). The Port of Dover says the full EES process for tourist traffic has not yet been implemented at Dover, so check its page before you travel (Port of Dover).
What EES records
When you register, you may be asked to give your fingerprints and have your photo taken. You may also be asked for your fingerprint or photo when you leave the Schengen area (GOV.UK).
- Children aged 11 or younger are not fingerprinted, but they can be asked for a photo (GOV.UK).
- There is no cost for EES registration (GOV.UK).
- Your digital EES record is valid for 3 years (GOV.UK).
Passport check first
Before you travel, check that your passport:
- has a date of issue less than 10 years before the date you arrive in the Schengen area
- has an expiry date at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave the Schengen area
Passports renewed before 1 October 2018 may have an issue date more than 10 years ago, so check the date of issue, not just the expiry date (GOV.UK).
Step by step at the port
- Check your passport. Use the rules above before you book.
- Arrive on time. Dover asks you to arrive at the Eastern Docks no more than 2 hours before your ferry departs, for processing at the French border (Port of Dover).
- Mixed vehicles go to the EES area. If your vehicle has both EU and non-EU (British) citizens inside, it has to go to the EES registration area (Port of Dover).
- Register. Non-EU passengers in a mixed vehicle complete their registration in that area. All passengers, including babies, are photographed, and children under 12 are not fingerprinted (Port of Dover). Have everyone's passport ready.
- Drive on. EES is replacing the manual stamping of passports (GOV.UK).
Eurotunnel at Folkestone
GOV.UK says Eurotunnel Le Shuttle at Folkestone has developed a purpose-built pre-registration area, and EES checks there are completed before you leave the UK (GOV.UK). Eurotunnel's own EES steps are not listed here yet. Check Eurotunnel's own website for its check-in times and any EES guidance before you travel.
The 90/180-day rule
Your total stay in the Schengen area must be no more than 90 days in every 180 days (GOV.UK). Work out your count before a long trip with the Schengen 90/180-day counter.
Other routes and flights
On other routes, you may be asked to create your EES record at the port or airport on arrival, and EES is replacing the manual stamping of passports (GOV.UK). Check your ferry operator or airline for the arrival process at their port or airport.
Tips that save time
- Keep passports in one bag, within reach of the front seats.
- Use your operator's app or updates to check for delays.
- Plan your arrival around the 2-hour window at Dover, and compare routes in Channel crossings compared.
What EES isn't
- It isn't ETIAS. GOV.UK says ETIAS is expected to start from autumn 2026, and no traveller action is needed yet. It also warns that websites selling ETIAS now are fraudulent, so do not pay anyone for it now (GOV.UK).
Plan your days
Use the Schengen 90/180-day counter before a long trip, then the driving in Europe checklist for the rest, including the UK sticker, Crit'Air, insurance and breakdown cover.
