Bao buns are Chinese, not Japanese. πŸ‡¨πŸ‡³

πŸ₯Ÿ What is a Bao Bun?

  • “Bao” (εŒ…) means bun in Chinese.
  • It’s a soft, fluffy steamed bun made from wheat flour.
  • Can be filled with meat, veggies, or sweet fillings.

🍽️ Popular Types of Bao:

  • Char siu bao – BBQ pork-filled (Cantonese dim sum classic)
  • Gua bao – Folded “taco-style” bun with braised pork belly (Taiwanese origin, but still Chinese)
  • Sheng jian bao – Pan-fried soup buns (Shanghai-style)
  • Dou sha bao – Sweet red bean paste filling

πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅ Japanese Equivalent?

Japan has Nikuman (肉まん) – a steamed bun inspired by Chinese bao, but it’s a Japanese adaptation, usually found in convenience stores and food stalls.

So while Japan has its own take, the original bao is 100% Chinese in origin.
