Bao buns are Chinese, not Japanese. π¨π³
π₯ What is a Bao Bun?
- “Bao” (ε ) means bun in Chinese.
- It’s a soft, fluffy steamed bun made from wheat flour.
- Can be filled with meat, veggies, or sweet fillings.
π½οΈ Popular Types of Bao:
- Char siu bao β BBQ pork-filled (Cantonese dim sum classic)
- Gua bao β Folded “taco-style” bun with braised pork belly (Taiwanese origin, but still Chinese)
- Sheng jian bao β Pan-fried soup buns (Shanghai-style)
- Dou sha bao β Sweet red bean paste filling
π―π΅ Japanese Equivalent?
Japan has Nikuman (θγΎγ) β a steamed bun inspired by Chinese bao, but it’s a Japanese adaptation, usually found in convenience stores and food stalls.
So while Japan has its own take, the original bao is 100% Chinese in origin.
